This Zero Emission Day, the case for cleaner transport is about more than cutting carbon. It’s about the air we breathe.
New research into the impact of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has provided striking evidence of the potential health benefits of reducing traffic-related air pollution.
The five-year CHILL study followed more than 3,400 children aged six to nine in London and Luton. Researchers found that, following the introduction of the ULEZ, nitrogen dioxide exposure fell faster in London and children’s lung function grew faster. After four years, the gap in lung function between the two groups had disappeared.
It is a powerful reminder that the transition to cleaner transport isn't simply about environmental targets. Reducing vehicle emissions can make a tangible difference to the health of the communities in which we live.
Electric vehicles have an important role to play. With no tailpipe emissions, they can help reduce the air pollution produced by everyday journeys, particularly in towns and cities where people are most exposed to traffic.
This Zero Emission Day, we’re looking beyond the journey itself and considering the impact of the vehicles we choose on the world around us.
Cleaner transport means cleaner air. And cleaner air means a healthier future for everyone.
