Powering Change: Coed-Ely Solar Farm Brings Clean Energy to the NHS
Published date:

Wales has taken another confident step toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future with the official opening of the Coed-Ely Solar Farm - now supplying renewable power directly to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
Built on a reclaimed colliery site, the solar farm represents a powerful symbol of transformation: turning a legacy of heavy industry into a hub for sustainable energy generation.
From Coal to Clean Energy
The Coed-Ely Solar Farm is home to more than 9,000 solar panels, generating enough electricity to power around 1,800 homes each year. By feeding power straight into the NHS estate, the project ensures that essential services such as lighting, heating and medical equipment operate on clean, locally generated energy.
This initiative is part of a wider push to decarbonise public infrastructure across Wales, reducing carbon emissions while strengthening the resilience and independence of local energy systems.
FleetEV’s Role in a Landmark Event
FleetEV were proud to support the official opening of the Coed-Ely site by providing two Maxus eTerron 9 all-electric 4x4 pick-ups for the event. These vehicles were used to transport visitors and dignitaries - including Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning - around the site.
With their rugged off-road capability and fully electric powertrains, the eTerron 9s were the ideal choice for navigating uneven terrain while showcasing the benefits of zero-emission mobility in demanding environments.
“Projects like Coed-Ely show how collaboration between government, local authorities, the NHS and industry can turn sustainability goals into practical action,” said a spokesperson for FleetEV. “We’re delighted to have played a small part in supporting such a forward-thinking project.”
Built for the Transition
The Maxus eTerron 9 pick-ups combine strength, reliability and electric efficiency, making them perfectly suited for renewable energy, construction and infrastructure projects across the UK.
Built tough for demanding sites
100% electric with zero tailpipe emissions
Perfect for renewable and infrastructure projects
A Brighter, Greener Future
The Coed-Ely Solar Farm stands as a perfect example of what can be achieved when sustainability, innovation and community collaboration align.
As FleetEV continues to support organisations across Wales and beyond with EV fleets, infrastructure and salary sacrifice schemes, this project reflects the very heart of what drives us: powering progress through clean, smart and sustainable transport.
